Spending one-on-one time with your child is something every parent treasures. A Mommy and Me photoshoot at Dawson Butte Ranch in Castle Rock, Colorado is the perfect way to capture that special bond. Whether you’re snuggling in the shade, walking hand in hand on a trail, or laughing in the wide open meadows, Dawson Butte offers the perfect backdrop to celebrate your connection.
Why Dawson Butte Is Ideal for a Mommy and Me Session
Dawson Butte Ranch is a peaceful open space just outside of Castle Rock. Due to it’ close proximity it’s a great location for small children who may not be able to sit in the car that long. With a mix of wide meadows, tall pine trees, and beautiful mountain views in the distance, it feels like you’ve escaped into the countryside—even though it’s only a short drive from town. For Mommy and Me photos, it provides quiet moments, beautiful light, and plenty of space for little ones to move and explore. I also love that while there are beautiful views it also allows you to shine in your photos. The open space helps to not take away the focus of you and your kiddo.

What Makes a Dawson Butte Mommy and Me Photoshoot So Special?
Dawnson Butte is so special because being out in the great outdoors is all about capturing connection. The natural setting at Dawson Butte helps kids feel relaxed and playful, which means I can capture those real smiles and sweet moments that happen between the two of you. No stiff posing—just genuine interaction and love.
A Peaceful and Easy Location for Mother and Child Photography
Dawson Butte is great for kids of all ages. The main trail is wide, flat, and easy to walk—even for toddlers. You can stay close to the trailhead or wander into one of the meadows for more open space. It’s never overly crowded, which helps little ones stay calm and focused during your session.
Plus, there are no loud distractions, so it’s easier for your child to stay engaged with you. You’ll notice their curiosity come to life in nature—and that kind of emotion always shines through in the final gallery.
What to Wear for a Dawson Butte Mommy and Me Photoshoot
The colors at Dawson Butte change with the seasons, but earthy, soft tones always work best. Try a dress in a soft cream, blush, or baby blue – paired with your child in coordinating neutrals. Flowy fabrics add a beautiful sense of movement, especially when there’s a light breeze.
Avoid bold prints, cartoon characters, or high-contrast colors that might be distracting. The goal is to keep the focus on your connection and emotion.

Best Time of Year for Dawson Butte Mommy and Me Photos
Spring and fall are especially beautiful at Dawson Butte, but each season brings its own charm. Spring offers new growth and soft green tones. Fall delivers golden grasses and warm, glowing light. Even summer and winter have their magic—the warmth of a summer sunset or the quiet, cozy feeling of snow-dusted trails.
If you’re not sure what season feels right for your photos, I can help guide you towards the best timing based on your vision and availability.
Timing Your Castle Rock Mommy and Me Session
Golden hour—the hour after sunrise or before sunset—is usually the best time for a soft, warm glow. But if your little one is happier in the morning, a quiet early session works great too. I love golden hour because the light is incredibly flattering. If you shoot at mid-day the sun is very harsh creating unpleasant shadows and the brightness making you squint.
Tips on Making Your Child Comfortable
Kids are unpredictable, and that’s okay! Here are a few helpful tips to make your child feel comfortable and confident during your session:
Snack time is always a win. Bring a few clean, non-messy snacks and water for quick breaks if needed.
Bring familiar items. A favorite stuffed animal or blanket can offer comfort between shots.
Dress them in soft, comfortable clothes. Avoid itchy tags or tight shoes.
Keep expectations low. Let the session unfold naturally instead of pushing for perfect behavior.
Offer praise and encouragement. Celebrate their cooperation with hugs, laughs, and small rewards afterward.

What you can Expect During Your Session with Me
Children often do better when they’re allowed to play and move. Dawson Butte has plenty of space to do just that. You can twirl together in the grass, sit and read a book, or simply cuddle under the trees. These small moments, captured naturally, often become the most meaningful images from your shoot.
Many moms worry about how their child will behave during the session. But the truth is—movement, curiosity, and even a little silliness make for the most heartwarming photos. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection.
