Brainard Lake Recreation Area, located within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, is one of Colorado’s most scenic outdoor destinations. Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just outside of Ward, Colorado, the area offers a tranquil setting with clear alpine lakes, pine forests, and panoramic views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The centerpiece, Brainard Lake, is surrounded by towering peaks, including Mount Audubon and Pawnee Peak. Several alpine lakes can be found within the recreation area making for a diverse choice in locations. The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and couples seeking an outstanding backdrop for their elopement.

Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Brainard Lake Recreation Area is open year-round, with certain seasonal restrictions. Facilities include parking lots, restrooms, picnic areas, and hiking trails, making it both accessible and equipped to host an intimate ceremony.

Why You Should Elope at Brainard Lake and the Benefits

Eloping at Brainard Lake offers a unique combination of natural beauty, seclusion, and accessibility. The stunning alpine environment provides a romantic and serene setting. Its proximity to Denver International Airport (DIA) and Boulder makes it convenient for couples and vendors to reach.

The benefits of eloping here include the following:

Unparalleled Scenery: The backdrop of mountain peaks, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear alpine lakes is ideal for photography.

Flexibility in Locations: Brainard Lake offers multiple scenic spots for ceremonies, each with unique views and ambiance.

Adventure Opportunities: Couples can incorporate hiking, kayaking, picnicking or stargazing into their day.

Why Summer and Fall Are the Best Times of Year to Elope There

Summer and fall offer the most reliable conditions for eloping at Brainard Lake.

Summer (Late June to Early September): During summer, the area comes alive with lush greenery, blooming wildflowers, and mild temperatures. Trails are fully open, and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. However, summer is also the peak season for visitors, so sunrise, sunset or weekday ceremonies are recommended.

Fall (Mid-September to Early October): Fall transforms the area with golden aspen leaves and crisp mountain air. While some trails may close due to early snow, the vivid autumn colors and fewer crowds make it a stunning time for an elopement. I still recommend eloping at sunrise or sunset to optimize the perfect lighting.

To obtain a permit:

  1. Contact the Boulder Ranger District for specific requirements and application forms.

How to Obtain Your Marriage License

Colorado makes obtaining a marriage license straightforward. You can apply at any county clerk’s office in the state. For Brainard Lake, Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s Office is the closest option.

  • Both parties must appear in person.
  • Provide valid identification (driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate).
  • Pay the $30 fee.
  • Colorado allows for self-solemnization, meaning you can marry without an officiant.

What to Wear for your Brainard Lake Elopement

Your attire should reflect the alpine conditions and outdoor setting of Brainard Lake. If you plan on wearing a dress you may want to opt for a lightweight and flowy gown. You may want to avoid wearing a dress that has a corset or anything to tight. If you are planning to elope in the winter you may want to opt for a dress with sleeves and add a cute sweater or wrap. The most important thing to remember is to bring sturdy hiking boots for walking or hiking between locations.

If you plan on wearing a suit and are eloping in the summer you will want to choose a breathable, light weight fabric. Additionally, if you want to elope in the winter you will want to choose a fabric that is heavier, and once again make sure to wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes.
