How to Legally Get Married in Lake City, Colorado

Couples must obtain a marriage license from any Colorado county clerk, which is valid statewide. Hinsdale County (317 Henson St, Lake City, CO 81235), where Lake City is located, issues licenses at the county clerk’s office. The process requires identification for both parties and typically does not include a waiting period. Once the license is obtained, it is valid for 35 days. Couples can then hold their ceremony at any legal location in Lake City, whether on public land, private property, or federally managed lands with the appropriate permits.

After the ceremony, the license is returned to the county clerk’s office for recording. 14,000 Ft. Mountains

Handies Peak is one of the more accessible Colorado 14ers, Handies Peak provides some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. The Grizzly Gulch trailhead is the standard route, and while it’s strenuous, it doesn’t require technical climbing. Along this route you will find wildflowers galore, alpine rivers, and breathtaking views. You don’t need to even hike the entire thing, hike a portion and get married in the basin below the peak.

Redcloud Peak is a popular 14er near Lake City known for its steady, non-technical trail and its signature red-colored summit ridge. It’s a great option for couples who want a challenging but achievable high-altitude hike with wide-open alpine views.

Sunshine Peak sits just south of Redcloud and is often paired with it since the two summits are connected by a ridgeline. It’s one of the more accessible 14ers in the area and offers expansive views of the San Juans, making it a solid choice for experienced hikers looking to add a second summit to their day.

Mountain Passes

Alpine Loop Scenic Byway – is a backcountry 4×4 route connecting Lake City to Ouray and Silverton. Highlights include Cinnamon Pass (12,620 ft) and Engineer Pass (12,800 ft). Along the loop, couples can find alpine meadows, lakes, historic mining ruins, and epic ridge lines for photos and ceremonies.

Smaller Forest Service roads and trails – off the Alpine Loop provide access to secluded lakes, creeks, and alpine basins. These are ideal for private, intimate moments and unique photography locations.

Lakes and Water Features

Lake San Cristobal – is the largest natural lake in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. This lake is great for paddle-boarding and kayaking. There are small island formations on the lake to explore.

Goose Island – Goose Island is a small, scenic island on Lake San Cristobal that you can actually get married on, making it one of the more unique ceremony spots in the Lake City area. You reach it by crossing a short suspension bridge, and once you’re on the island, you’ll find a quiet, open space surrounded by lake and mountain views.

Smaller Alpine Lakes & Rivers – scattered throughout the area, these provide quiet backdrops for vow exchanges, especially along side roads or near the Alpine Loop.

Historic Locations

Downtown Lake City, Colorado – has historic streets with preserved 19th-century buildings create charming photo backdrops and offer easy access to amenities. Downtown Lake City is surrounded by trees, has mountain views from the streets and has a small river that runs through the town making for really cute photos.

Ghost Towns & Mining Ruins – can be found throughout the area. Remnants of the mining era provide an interesting backdrop for couples who want something a little different.

Why You Don’t Have to Choose Just One Location

One of the advantages of eloping in Lake City, Colorado is that you don’t need to limit yourself to a single location. Many of the lakes, peaks, passes, and historic areas are within a manageable distance of each other. It’s possible to incorporate multiple locations into one elopement day or a full weekend.

For example, a couple may begin with a small lakeside ceremony at Lake San Cristobal. Later in the day, you can move to a high-elevation ridge or a mountain pass on the Alpine Loop for dramatic mountain photos. Renting a jeep or side-by-side is a super fun elopement day experience – off-roading is pretty much what Lake City is known for, so if there is something worth splurging on I definitely recommend renting a 4×4 vehicle.

Downtown Lake City can also provide additional backdrops for portraits. You can also host a small reception at an Airbnb or local restaurant, where you can get cake cutting photos, first dances and candids of you with your guests. Using multiple locations allows for a ton of variety in photos and the ability to tailor the experience to whatever type of adventure you want to have!

Hiking – is one of the most common ways to explore the landscape around Lake City. There are several easy to moderate hiking options that you can find on Alltrails. More challenging hiking options include hiking the 14ers in the area: Handies Peak, Redcloud Peak, Sunshine Peak, and Uncompahgre Peak (only recommend to couples who are avid hikers and have experience at high altitudes).

Off-roading – is one of the biggest draws in the area and a practical way to reach high-altitude scenery without long hikes. The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, Cinnamon Pass, Engineer Pass, and the smaller forest roads branching off them all offer access to alpine basins, historic mining sites, and panoramic overlooks. Couples can rent 4×4 vehicles in town or hire a local driver if they prefer not to navigate technical terrain. Off-roading is one of the easiest ways to include multiple locations in one elopement day.

Waterfall Viewing – Lake City has several waterfall options that are easy to reach without a long hike. North Clear Creek Falls is one of the most popular and offers a short, accessible walk to a large waterfall with a strong viewing area. It’s a good choice for couples who want a scenic stop without a strenuous trail, and it works well for guests who prefer something low-impact.

Horseback riding – works well for couples who want a slower-paced activity or prefer exploring the area without hiking. It’s also a good option for including guests, since most rides are accessible for people with little to no riding experience. Guided rides typically operate seasonally, so availability is best from late spring through early fall. Local outfitters offer guided trail rides through the surrounding forests, meadows, and lower alpine areas.

Fishing – in Lake City there is excellent trout fishing and is a great option for couples who want a calm, relaxed activity. Common spots include Lake San Cristobal, Henson Creek, and the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River.

Understanding Lake City’s weather patterns is essential when planning an elopement. The town sits at over 8,600 feet, and many surrounding locations reach 10,000–13,000 feet. Because of the elevation, seasons operate differently here than in most places, and weather can change quickly.

Summer (late june–August)

• High-elevation roads such as Cinnamon Pass and Engineer Pass typically open in late July, depending on snowpack.
• Most locations are now open and give you more options for where to say, “I do.”
• Daytime temperatures in town usually range from the mid-60s to mid-70s, with cooler conditions in the high mountain passes.
• Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, so early start times are recommended if you plan to be above treeline.
• Wildflowers typically peak between early July and early August in the basins and meadows.

Fall (September–October)

• Aspen trees often peak around late September, though timing can vary each year.
• Temperatures start to drop quickly, especially at higher elevations.
• Snowstorms can occur as early as late September in the alpine, so high passes may close earlier than expected.

Winter (November–April)

• Many high-elevation areas and backroads close for the season due to snow.
• Temperatures can be extremely cold, especially in the morning and evening.
• Activities in winter typically include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, cozy cabin time, and simple in-town locations.

Spring (May–Early June)

• A slow and unpredictable time of year.
• Snowmelt can make trails muddy and many high-elevation routes remain closed.
• Weather can vary widely—one week might feel like early summer, while the next brings late-season snow.
• The area is quieter, but access to mountain passes is still limited.

Alpine Village – A set of historic log cabins located in town. These cabins offer a modern mountain experience. Staying here gives couples easy access to all that Lake City has to offer. This is one of my personal favorites and the owners are super amazing!

Alpine Moose Lodge – Situated near downtown Lake City, this lodge provides rooms, a restaurant, and central access to town amenities. It’s a good option for couples who want convenience combined with a mountain-town atmosphere.

Lake View Property Management – A property management company that lists vacation rentals in Lake City, Colorado. It doesn’t look like they book that far out online but maybe giving them a call to see if they could make an exception might be beneficial!

Inn at the Lake – The Inn at the Lake is a cozy mountain retreat situated a few steps from Lake San Cristobal. The Inn reflects the charm of a mountain lodge. It has 10 rooms with amazing lake and mountain views.

Cabins or Vacation Rentals – Various privately owned cabins, homes, and VRBO and Airbnb options are available both near Lake San Cristobal and in town. These allow couples to customize their stay based on preferred level of privacy, style, or proximity to their ceremony locations.

Camping or Forest Service Options – For couples seeking a fully immersive outdoor experience, nearby campgrounds or dispersed camping areas provide access to more remote scenery. These options work best for couples comfortable with backcountry conditions and limited amenities.

Lodging availability fluctuates and peak seasons fill quickly, early planning is recommended.

How to Get to Lake City, Colorado

Lake City is remote by design, that’s part of its appeal. However, it does require some planning when it comes to travel. The town is located in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, surrounded by rugged peaks and scenic byways. There are no major highways leading directly into Lake City, which helps preserve its quiet, small-town atmosphere. Here’s what to know when planning your trip:

Nearest Airports

• Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) – About 2 hours from Lake City. This is the most convenient airport, offering regular commercial flights and easy access to rental cars.
• Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) – About 1.5 hours away. A good option if you’re coming from Denver or connecting through larger airports.
• Durango-La Plata Airport (DRO) – Around 3 hours away. Works well if you plan to explore more of the southwestern part of the state.
• Denver International Airport (DEN) – Around 5.5 to 6 hours from Lake City. A longer drive but often the most affordable and reliable for flights.

Driving to Lake City

All routes leading into Lake City offer mountain driving, but they’re paved, maintained, and accessible for most vehicles during the warmer months.

• From Montrose: Take US-50 east, then CO-149 south through the towns of Cimarron and Powderhorn. This is one of the most direct and commonly used routes.
• From Gunnison: Follow US-50 west and connect to CO-149 heading south. This route takes you through beautiful rolling terrain before entering the San Juans.
• From Creede/South Fork Area: Drive north on CO-149. This stretch of the Silver Thread Scenic Byway travels along high-elevation valleys and alpine lakes.

CO-149 (The Silver Thread Scenic Byway) is the only paved road into Lake City. It’s open year-round, but conditions can change quickly during winter storms.
