How to Elope at Lake Isabelle (Step-by-Step)

Planning an elopement at Lake Isabelle involves several key steps. While the process is relatively straightforward, it requires attention to permits, access, and timing.

1. Choose Your Date: The best time to elope at Lake Isabelle is between July – Mid-October. Access is limited outside of this window due to snow. This varies year to year based on how much snowfall we get. This trail can be closed well in to July some years. Check with your photographer or planner to ensure you choose a date where this trail is accessible. Using Alltrails to check trail stats can also be very helpful.

2. Book Your Photographer: Many couples begin the planning process by securing a photographer who also helps guide location selection, timeline creation, and logistics. 3. Secure Timed Entry + Parking: Brainard Lake Recreation Area (Lake Isabelle is located inside) requires timed entry reservations during peak season.

4. Plan Your Ceremony Location: Decide whether you want to hike to Lake Isabelle or choose a more accessible location like Brainard Lake if you plan on involving guests.

5. Build Your Timeline: I recommend choosing to build your timeline around either sunrise or sunset since this has fewer crowds. However, thunder and lighting storms can occur in the afternoons.

6. Prepare for Altitude and Weather: Lake Isabelle sits at approximately 11,000 feet, so proper acclimation is essential. Make sure if you are coming from out of state you give yourselves a few days to acclimate and bring cans of oxygen along if you aren’t super strong hikers.

Necessary Permits for a Lake Isabelle Elopement

Special Use Permits for Ceremonies: If your group exceeds more than 8 people including your photographer and videographer you will need to apply for a large group permit which is $11. Contact the Boulder Ranger District at the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests for specific requirements (303-541-2500).

Parking Permits + Timed Entries: Between June and mid-October, parking permits and timed entries are required to access the Brainard Lake Recreation Area. Parking is limited and spots fill up quickly. Additionally, make sure to reserve your spot in advance on the official Recreation.gov website. The parking fee for one vehicle is $14 and the timed entry fee is $2.

2026 Permit Update: Timed entry reservations go on sale at 8:00 am MT / 10:00 a.m. ET May 30 and will be continually released on a 15-day rolling window. You must arrive on the entry date, at the entry time, and park in the parking lot indicated on your reservation. Once your reservation is validated at the welcome station or scanned in your windshield if arriving outside of when the Welcome Station is staffed, your day use parking is good for the remainder of the day. Only one day use parking reservation is required for the vehicle and all occupants. Please note: The upper trailhead parking lots (Long Lake, Mitchell Lake, Niwot) are not scheduled to open until July 1.

There are also multiple parking lots inside of the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, if you want to hike to Lake Isabelle I recommend reserving a parking space in the Long Lake parking lot. The trail that leaves from this parking area requires the least amount of hiking to Lake Isabelle.

As mentioned above, the best place to park for your Lake Isabelle elopement is the Long Lake Parking Lot. This is the closest parking lot to the trailhead. However, this parking lot does not open until July. If you leave from here the hike is 4.2 miles with 550 ft. in elevation gain. However, if you decide to park at the Brainard Lake Recreation area the hike is 6.2 miles with 750 ft. in elevation gain.

The best time to Elope at Lake Isabelle

July to Early October: The trail to Lake Isabelle is typically accessible during these months, as snowpack diminishes. Note that snow may still be present early in the season. Lake Isabelle is drained every August and can be quite empty if you choose to elope August-October. I also always suggest eloping at Lake Isabelle during a weekday at either sunrise or sunset as it is less crowded and offers more privacy.

Sunrise vs. Sunset: I love both sunrise and sunset at Lake Isabelle! The lighting is so beautiful you can’t go wrong with either choice. The only downside to eloping in the afternoon is the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. Regardless, to get the best photo ops. you should definitely choose to center your day around either sunrise or sunset. I would avoid midday as the lighting can be very harsh.

Eloping with Friends & Family at Lake Isabelle

If you plan on bringing your guests along for a portion of your elopement, I suggest having your ceremony along the lakeshore of Brainard Lake. This cuts out the hiking for your guests and also helps maintain the integrity of the ecosystem. Lake Isabelle’s alpine territory is very fragile. The hike to Lake Isabelle is difficult for people with mobility issues or people who are not avid hikers. I recommend planning on having your own adventure with your spouse either before or after your ceremony and then meeting up with your family/friends for the ceremony.

If you plan on hosting your ceremony at Brainard Lake please make sure you follow all the rules. The amount of guests you are allowed to have is 15 or less. Ideally, I would keep this at 10 including yourselves and your photographer. Additionally, you are not permitted to have any props or seating at this location. If your guests require being able to sit I would suggest hosting your ceremony at a location in either Nederland or Boulder.

Also, please make sure to avoid geotagging your photos and follow Leave No Trace regulations. If you bring it in, you pack it out.

What to Wear for Your Lake Isabelle Elopement

Wedding Dresses

When choosing a wedding dress for your elopement at Lake Isabelle you will need to prioritize comfort and mobility. Since this is an outdoor location that requires hiking you may want to consider lightweight fabrics. This will allow for easy movement during prompts and poses your photographer may give you.

I personally love a flowy A-line gown and dresses with trains because they offer a ton of diversity for your photos. But I know a dress with a a train can be a bit over zealous when it comes to eloping outside but they do make for beautiful and dramatic photos.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that if you are coming from out of state you may want to consider if your dress is easy to pack and transport. You could also buy a dress that has a detachable skirt or cape to make packing and hiking easier. I recommend trying to get your dress into a vacuum sealed bag to cut down on how much space it takes up in your luggage and steam it when you get here.

As for foot wear, ditch the heels and opt for sneakers or hiking boots (break them in months before). I think it’s super cute pairing a dress with boots!

Suits

If you are planning on wearing a suit for your elopement it is important that you select fabrics based on the time of year you plan on eloping. If you are eloping in the summer make sure to choose lighter fabrics such as linen or cotton. For winter months, you may want to consider wool.
